Coming up with video room ideas
Jan. 22nd, 2012 12:29 pmI went to the Fencon 2012 kickoff party last night, always fun to hang out with the gang. Plus I met one of the organizers from Furry Fiesta. It seems he was out at Instacon a few weeks back and seemed to get a lot out of the experience. We chatted a bit, he was interested in how we ran video at Fencon. Since FF is closely tied to anime fandom they were more inclined to play by the public performance rules than we have. Anime distributors tends to keep a close eye what's going on at these shows more so than our branch of fandom.
So, we have officially started planning for September. This year's theme is "The Future's So Bright..." it does seem like every other convention is going with the Apocalypse theme this year, so the Con Com wanted to go the opposite direction and play up the idea of a positive future. I heartily approve of this, and I'm definitely wanting to express that in the video room.
My initial idea for the Friday line up, which is usually where I really highlight the theme of the con, was to be an afternoon of 1950's black and white sci-fi films. I had made a list of movies for consideration at the wrap up meeting last year, and most of them were a bit newer than that. I'm tempted to start the show with 2010: The Year We Make Contact and make an afternoon of more modern and positive movies, such as The Astronaut Farmer and maybe a few episodes of Star Cops. We had a few kids showing up in the video room late Friday night for Harry Potter, so I'm thinking of keeping the shows a bit more kid friendly later in the evening. I'm thinking about a Friday night double feature of E.T. and Space Camp, or some other kid friendly sci-fi.
Since Peter David is one of our guests, we naturally are running some of the Babylon 5 episodes he's written.
While it's not on theme, I am adding the 17th Precinct unaired pilot on some time Saturday. It's Ron Moore's cops in a world of magic show that NBC didn't pick up. Should be plenty of interest in seeing that, I know last year's Wonder Woman pilot got a pretty good crowd despite it being utter rubbish.
But right now it's all about throwing out ideas and seeing what I think works. I won't really have to put a lot of energy in this till August.
